When we hear anything about science fiction probably the first thing that comes to mind was future event such as artificial intelligence, teleportation, cloning and so on. Some people say that primary function of science fiction is the future but; others say that main function of science fiction is the present. In my opinion, main function of science fiction is present because you cannot imagine anything without present. The present is source of your ideas and your imagination.
First of all, primary function of science fiction is present because you can create your ideas, imagination with the present. It is a kind of source. You cannot say anything about unknown and also the future is unknown. I think you cannot also predict the future because you cannot predict something which is unknown and no limitation. For example first computer was very big, it is shape like room but now we have mobile computers. In my opinion, no one could predict this progress. For example, first cloning experiment did in 1885 by Hans Dreisch and then H.G Wells wrote The Island of Doctor Moreau in 1896 as you know he mentions cloning in this book. In this direction, we can say primary fiction of science fiction is the present. Another example is that, 1950s science fictions movies developed with apocalyptic themes because of the devastating potential of atomic bomb and the increase of tension between America and Soviet. Therefore, we can say that science fiction is about the present.
In conclusion, main function of science function is the present. The future is unknown and unpredictable.
